Exploring the Lower Danube

Exploring the Lower Danube: My Journey with AmaWaterways

I recently returned from an unforgettable river cruise with AmaWaterways along the Lower Danube, sailing from the vibrant city of Budapest to Giurgiu in Romania. The trip took me through a mix of history, culture, and natural beauty that I could never have imagined.

Pre-Cruise Days in Budapest: A Perfect Start

Before boarding our AmaWaterways cruise, we spent a few unforgettable days in Budapest. We stayed at the elegant Corinthia Hotel, a historic gem with luxurious touches that set the tone for our adventure. Each day was filled with exploring the city’s iconic sights, like Fisherman’s Bastion and Buda Castle.

One evening, we dined at TATI, a fantastic farm-to-table restaurant known for its fresh ingredients. We savored traditional Hungarian goulash, a perfect way to immerse ourselves in local flavors before setting sail down the Danube.

Setting Sail from Budapest

Our journey began in the heart of Budapest, one of the most picturesque cities in Europe. As the AmaBella set sail late in the evening, the city put on a magical show. The Parliament Building, Chain Bridge, and Buda Castle were all illuminated, casting golden reflections on the river as we glided past. Watching these iconic landmarks light up the night was an unforgettable way to begin our journey. The ship itself was elegant and comfortable, with attentive staff ensuring we felt right at home from the moment we boarded.

Before we left Hungary, we made a stop in the charming town of Mohács, which is rich in history and a critical point in Hungary’s past. From there, we explored Pécs, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its early Christian tombs and striking cathedrals, and took a tour of the Takler Winery, where we sampled exceptional Hungarian wines and learned about the region’s long-standing winemaking traditions.

Into Croatia and Serbia

Sailing further downstream, we crossed into Croatia and visited Vukovar, a city that bears visible scars from the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s. The war had been so recent, only 20 years ago, that it was hard to imagine how much the people here had endured. Despite the heavy history, there was a sense of resilience, and our guide shared touching stories of the region’s recovery. We left the boat in Vukovar and took a tour to a winery in Ilok, where we enjoyed tastings with a beautiful view of the vineyards and river.

Next, we sailed to Serbia’s capital, Belgrade. Serbia’s dynamic capital, was a key highlight on my AmaWaterways journey. The city’s long history, stretching from Ottoman rule to the scars left by the Yugoslav Wars, is evident everywhere. Kalemegdan Fortress, with its sweeping views over the Danube and Sava rivers, was a memorable stop. We spent time wandering through Skadarlija, the bohemian district known for its lively cafes, street music, and artistic atmosphere.

Cruising Through the Iron Gates

One of the most breathtaking moments of the journey was cruising through the Iron Gates, a dramatic gorge between Serbia and Romania. The cliffs towered above us as the ship navigated the narrow passage. It felt like we were sailing through a different world. This natural wonder is truly a sight to behold, and the sense of awe I felt as we passed through was overwhelming. We also glimpsed Trajan’s Tablet, a Roman artifact carved into the rock, adding a sense of ancient history to this natural beauty.

Bulgaria: History and Culture

Next, we docked in Bulgaria, where we explored Vidin and the impressive Baba Vida Fortress. The fortress offers a glimpse into medieval life and stands as one of the most well-preserved in the country. We also visited Belogradchik, where the unique rock formations left me speechless. These natural sculptures seemed almost otherworldly and added to the sense of wonder that this entire cruise evoked.

Romania: A Final Reflection

Our journey concluded in Giurgiu, Romania, from where we took a trip to Bucharest. Known as the “Paris of the East,” Bucharest is a city of wide boulevards and a fascinating mix of grand architecture and stark reminders of its communist past. The Palace of the Parliament, one of the largest administrative buildings in the world, is both awe-inspiring and sobering.
